Heddon History
In 1894, James Heddon, a beekeeper, fishing aficionado and visionary had an idea that would forever change the face of the fishing industry. After more than half a decade of perfecting the wooden artificial fishing lure, the Heddon Company opened its doors in 1902 to produce and distribute an array of fishing lures to a nation hungry to experience a new way of fishing for a new century and generation.
Originally made by hand in the Heddon family's kitchen in Dowagiac, Michigan, operations soon moved to a shining new factory a few miles down the road. By 1910, the Heddon fishing lure factory was in full swing, and the Heddon lures were being distributed by a sales distributor just miles north in Canada.
By the time 1950 rolled around, the Heddon fishing lure brand was well entrenched in the hearts and minds of a new generation of anglers. The company was pumping out over 12,000 fishing lures everyday from the Dowagiac factory, and had also diversified into a series of popular fishing reels and rods.
From its beginnings in a small pond in Dowagiac, Michigan, the Heddon fishing lure traveled far and wide across mighty oceans, and redefined the world of fishing. As tends to happen, though, the fantastic popularity of the Heddon fishing lure spurred no shortage of competition, and in 1955 the Heddon family sold their operations to the Murchinson family in an effort to end the Heddon family fishing lure tale at a profitable time.
Variations of the original cast of Heddon fishing lures are still manufactured today, and vintage Heddon lures are widely sought after by a community of collectors of fishing tackle and lures.
